    • Formerly enslaved Back people were excluded and had to purchase their land.

  • The Black population accrued 15 million acres by the 1900s despite institutional obstacles.

1864

  • Emancipation Proclamation

    • An executive order by President Abraham Lincoln that freed those enslaved in the Confederate States in open rebellion against the Union
